Wyomissing Basketball Club

Dear Wyomissing Area Parent:

The Wyomissing Basketbll Club (WBC) is a non-profit organization whose goal is to help student athletes build a strong foundation and love for the game of basketball. Players will learn skill development in shooting, ball handling, passing, movement and teamwork in a fun and positive environment. Our season typically runs from December through February.

Eligibility is based on the same criteria as in past seasons. Any child who attends or is eligible to attend grades 1-6 in the Wyomissing Area School District may register to play in the WBC. The WBC may charge registration fees to cover general organziation expenses, jerseys, basketballs, league play, etc. The WBC shares resources with the Wyomissing Area Facilities. The Wyomissing Jr/Sr High School Programs have schedule priority over the WBC and there may be times when practices and/or games are rescheduled or even cancelled due to competing schedule conflicts.

The simplest way to register your child (or children) for WBC Programs is online at www.wbchoops.com.

1st and 2nd grade

At this level, we focus on fundamental skill development. This is a 3 v 3 league and there are separate boys and girls intramural leagues. Games and practices will be held in the WHEC. There is one practice during the week and one game on the weekend. Generally, there are 5-7 players per team with 3 players per team on the court at any one time. The hoops are lowered to 8 feet for this level. All of the coaches in the league are parent volunteers, and they also referee all contests. Stealing is not allowed at this level, enforcement is left to the discretion of the coaches. All players get equal playing time.

3rd and 4th grade

At this level, we will continue to focus on fundamental skill development. This is a 5 v 5 league and there are separate boys and girls intramural leagues at this level. Games and practices are held at the WHEC. Typically, there is one practice, one skills clinic, and one game per week. Participants play full court with the hoops set at the standard 10 feet. Defense is left to the discretion of the coaches according to the developmental skill level of the players, but pressing and zone defenses are not allowed. All players get equal playing time. Teams at this level are organized with the assistance of the elementary physical education teachers.

5th and 6th grade

At this level, there are intramural/recreational and tournament/travel leagues. Everyone is welcome to try-out for the travel teams but no one is guaranteed a spot on the team. Everyone is guaranteed a spot on an intramural/recreational team.

For the boys, to be eligible for the travel team, one must participate in the intramural league as well. For the girls, they play either for the recreational or the travel team, not both. However, this is left to the discretion of the commisioner. There is a greater time commitment for those chosen for the tournament/travel teams. Players must be willing to accept this time commitment if they decide to play on the tournament teams. Intramural/recreational teams generally have a 2-3 days per week commitment. Games and practices are typically held at WREC or the Old Gym at the High School. At the intramural/recreational level, all players will get equal playing time. At the tournament/travel level, each player is guaranteed a minimum of 3 minutes per half. Tournament/travel league players will have a 4 day per week commitment.

The WBC, along with the school coaches, will conduct evaluations for 5th and 6th graders. The purpose of these sessions is to try and balance teams as evenly as possible. These evaluations also serve to fill the rosters of the tournament/travel teams. Preference will be given to players who attend both evaluation sessions. Attendance at the evaluations is for players and evaluators only. The evaluations are closed to family members.

If you have a reversible blue/white jersey with a number, please wear it to the evaluations.

All players will be contacted by the coaches and will be given their team information.

If you are interested in volunteering please indicate it on the registration form. Volunteers are needed to keep the program running.

If you need financial assistance, please contact us for more details.
